     Maker Holidays 27-29 June 2016 & 1 July 2016

    The June/July holidays are a good time for children to explore other interests as well as learn something new and exciting. Our Maker Holiday programme is designed to introduce your child to an array of activities and technologies and to allow them to explore the possibilities of these technologies. These classes are geared towards high school children (ie: between the ages of 13 and 18) and are run from 8am to 1pm on the given dates.

    Maker Holidays - June 2016

     

    The Programme:
    27 June (Monday 8am to 3pm) – 3D Printing
    Explore the concept of 3D printing, its potential for the future, the software needed to create 3D figures and see the machine work. They will leave with a small 3D printed item of their own.

    In the class we will cover:
    1. the background and history of 3D printing
    2. What impact 3D printing will have on the future
    3. Different technologies in 3D printing
    4. FDM/FFF printing
    5. Material options with 3D printing
    6. Understanding 3D models
    7. How to get a 3D model
    8. Modelling software options
    9. Preparing a model for print
    10. 3D print a small example for each person.

    We will provide: all materials
    *You need to bring/ do: In order to get the most out of the class, it is best if everyone can bring a laptop computer (no tablets) and mouse with certain free software pre-installed (this will save a bit of time) for easy modelling register for an account for this online software:vhttps://www.tinkercad.com/ for detailed modelling http://www.sketchup.com/download/all and https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/sketchup-stl
    Slicing software: https://ultimaker.com/en/cura-software (established versions NOT BETA)

    28 June (Tuesday 8am to 3pm) – Laser cutting
    Explore how a laser cutter works as well as some of the software to create designs for cutting and etching. Your child will learn how to use the laser cutter safely, how to change the settings and the result of the these changes; and they will leave with a laser cut item of their own.
    We will provide: all materials
    *You need to bring: Laptop (no tablets) with a mouse and install Inkscape for free (https://inkscape.org/download/)

    29 June (Wednesday 8am to 3pm) – Arduino
    Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for anyone making interactive projects.

    This class is an introduction to arduino where you will learn the basics and the functionality of arduino.
    We will provide: all materials needed.
    *What do you need to bring: Laptop with Arduino IDE installed https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software

    1 July (Friday 9am to 3pm) – Open Day
    Come in and make your own item from the classes you took during the week. Choose to laser cut or 3D printing something of your own making.
